NBN

The National Broadband Network will be providing phone lines to the country soon enough.

How can Absolute Phone and Data help?

  • We can reconnect your existing phone points to the NBN
  • We can install new data points, this can allow you to have the modem or wifi in a more convenient location
  • We can not install the fibre, the fibre is only installed by NBN or Opticomm's own technicians

Making the transition to NBN

The transition to NBN can be much harder for businesses as standard nbn services are focused on residential single line services

Telstra uses cisco voice gateways to deliver blocks of up to 8 standard-like phone lines

Optus uses the same kind of device although a different brand

in both cases these lines are not equivalent to the older technology. they lack the features that phone systems utilise for more advanced functions

we have recently had multiple clients having issues with these transitions with issues ranging from line hunt groups missing lines to primary phone lines being lost in limbo unable to be reclaimed.

The solution is to follow these steps to ensure everything goes smoothly

  1. Find out what NBN technology you're going onto.
    • if it's curb or node, nominate a phone line from your huntgroup to carry the vdsl not your primary line or fax line if that's still relevant to you.
    • any other technology is a new connection so doesn't require a sacrifice.
    • If you are unsure call us and we can help you out.
  2. Get the NBN service connected separately to your existing data services...do not disconnect your current internet there may be congestion issues.
  3. Get VoIP lines connected that are NOT through adaptors. Directly registered voip lines have every available feature of telephone lines...adapted VoIP lines have less features than you original lines did.
  4. Once your NBN data is confirmed to be stable, and your new VoIP lines are confirmed to be superior to the previous technology, port the relevant phone numbers to the Voip services.
  5. Once the porting has completed you can terminate any remaining services from your original providers that are no longer required.

This method works with next to no downtime. there will be a period of having the incorrect outgoing caller ID but that number will still be YOUR number just not your main number. If you have a Hybrex system you can upgrade to directly utilise voip. the savings in call costs will pay for the updated hardware quickly

Other brands of system might be able to use VoIP directly depending on make and model.

Contact us for more information we can make recommendations on NBN and VoIP providers to ease the transition.

What is an RSP?

Retail Service Provider

If your familiar with the term ISP, Internet Services Provider, then RSP is very similar. The Fibre connection supplied by opticomm or NBNco is the property of those two companies.

They wholesale the connection to RSP's, companies such as iiNet, Exetel, Optus and even Telstra sell you Access to the network. thus "Retail Service Provider" because they don't so much provide the internet just the account to use it.

There are still differences in each RSP, some may favour netflix traffic, while others have better support for VPN's and remote desktops. If you don't have specialised requirements feel free to choose any provider and plan. but look around as they vary significantly in price for what is ultimately similar services

NBN Fibre to the node

NBN fibre to the node will be rolling out to a large number of businesses and homes as well as residential units this technology will require jump ring from MDF’s in businesses and residential units similar to ADSL currently requires. NBN will provide a copper pair from the node located external to the building to the building MDF from the MDF of the building it will be the customer’s responsibility to connect this copper pair to a socket located inside the building where the RSP will provide a modem router to connect data and possibly provide one or two phone lines out the back of the router.

The main difference with this technology is that all phone lines will be provided on site by your new NBN router or NBN Phone System equipment not via the old telephone exchanges as in the past all internal connections within your business home or unit will need to be reconfigured to work from the new NBN equipment.

In the past  with ADSL it was possible to plug phones directly into the old-style phone line utilising ADSL filters, with NBN fibre to the node technology this will no longer be possible only the new NBN modem router can be plugged directly into the old-style phone line provided by NBN all your phones will then need to be connected via the back of the router or use VoIP lines via a Phone System or use a SIP phone or SIP cordless phones which are also available.

Absolute Phone and Data can help you with all your NBN fibre to the node connection issues including

  • NBN fibre to the node jumpering

  • Fault finding on ADSL connections internal to your building
  • Additional phone points
  • Additional data points
  • NBN compatible phone systems
  • Connecting the NBN to your old phone system

NBN wireless connections

NBN wireless will no longer require a phone line running back to the old Telstra exchanges and your old phone line will  need to be disconnected from the new set up. NBN will provide an antenna on your roof and equipment inside your premises and your RSP will then provide you with a modem router which will provide your data requirements (Internet access). In this case all phones within the office or home or residential unit will need to be re-cabled back to the new equipment to provide phone services within the building. VoIP phone systems can be connected for businesses and SIP phones and SIP cordless phones can be used or so working directly out the back of the new equipment.

The old-style Telstra phone line will slowly disappear to be replaced with phone services working over the Internet via VOIP Phone Systems,SIP phones or SIP cordless phones.

Absolute Phone and Data can help you with all your NBN wireless connection issues including

NBN fibre to the premises

With NBN fibre to the premises the old-style Telstra PSTN (analogue) phone lines will not be used and your new phone services will be running over the Internet either with VoIP phone systems or SIP phones. If you are running a business you may need to make alterations to your phone system or possibly upgrade to an NBN compatible phone system even the very old commander phone systems can be connected to the new NBN services is just a matter of working out the right way to do it.

VOIP analogue adapters are available and can supply analogue phone lines to run your old-style Phone System there are a few analogue phone services that will struggle on the new NBN system they include.
